The artifact most likely stems from reverse digitization from literature, specifically from the mention of "japonicus Verh." in a key to Epanerchodus species by Verhoeff (1940: 135)[1]. The correct authority is Carl, 1902, but Verhoeff wrongly cited his own name as authorship. As other papers by Verhoeff on Oriental polydesmids were published in 1937, that year may have been assumed correct during digitization (J. Spelda, pers. comm., 15.i.2021).
