General description:
Kraepelin (1903: 162)[1] synonymized this variety under Ethmostigmus platycephalus (Newp.). Attems (1930: 181)[2], who recognized three subspecies of E. platycephalus, synonymized this variety to E. platycephalus platycephalus. Schileyko & Stoev (2016: 258)[3] and Bonato et al. (2016 onwards)[4] recognized E. platycephalus as the subspecies E. rubripes platycephalus but those authors did not mention Heterostoma platycephala var. lugubre. Myriatrix follows Kraepelin (1903) and Attems (1930) by placing Heterostoma platycephala var. lugubre Haase, 1887 in synonymy with E. r. platycephalus.
