Present classification of Diplopoda Penicillata (Myriapoda), with new definitions of taxa An overview of the classification of Penicillata is presented, based on an unpublished manuscript written by B. Condé some years before his death, updated to take into account recent work on the group. It revises the descriptions of Silvestri’s (1948a) superfamilies and families, and proposes a subdivision of the family Polyxenidae into four sub-families: Polyxeninae Lucas, 1840, Monographinae Condé nov., Macroxeninae Condé nov. and Hypogexeninae Schubart, 1947. The first three subfamilies are characterised by the structure of the telson, while the fourth is of uncertain status. The creation of a family-rank taxon for the succinctly described species H. pusillus Schubart in 1947 appears unwarranted and we therefore reduce Hypogexenidae to the rank of a subfamily, Hypogexeninae, within the Polyxenidae.
