Species concept: Morphological Species Concept

Diagnosis: Antennae with 24-26 antennal articles. Basal 2-6 (usually 3-5) antennal articles sparsely hirsute. Cephalic plate with 2 anteriorly diverging longitudinal paramedian sutures. Articles 2 and 3 of second maxillae with ventral ridges ending in teeth. Forcipular coxosternite with transverse suture. T1 with anterior transverse sulcus. T21 without median longitudinal suture. LL19-20 without dorsodistal prefemoral spines. Distomesal prefemoral process of L21 with 5-20 (usually 6-9) distal spines.

Distribution: 

Scolopendra heros is found in the USA and Mexico. USA: Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona (see Shelley, 2002: 33-34[1]). Mexico: Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora, Sinaloa, and Nayarit (see Shelley, 2002: 34-35[1]), and Colima (Cupul-Magaña, 2010: 133[2]).

Deleted records: USA: Deleted from New York by Underwood (1887: 64[3]). Deleted from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, California and eastern Louisiana by Shelley (2002: 33[1]). Mexico: The species was reported from Yucatán by Cupul-Magaña & Bueno-Villegas (2015: 8[4]). The record was based on a misidentification of a specimen of S. sumichrasti (Cupul-Magaña et al., 2018: 86[5]).
